Short biography
50 WORDS
Elena Vale is the author of the Rowan Bay novels, beginning with The Shape of Leaving. A former bookseller, she writes about coastlines, chosen family and the courage it takes to return. She lives above a harbour, where she teaches workshops on beginnings and answers reader letters.
Long biography
150 WORDS
Elena Vale writes literary fiction about the places that shape us and the people who bring us back. Her debut, The Shape of Leaving, introduced readers to Rowan Bay, a harbour town preparing to lose its lighthouse, and to Mara, who returns home to empty her mother’s house and finds a story she was never told.
Before writing full time, Elena spent a decade as a bookseller, hosting reading groups and late-night launches. She now teaches workshops on beginnings for festivals, libraries and writing schools, and writes essays on setting and memory.
The Rowan Bay series continues with Where the Light Stays and The Quiet Between Tides. Elena lives on the coast with a houseful of notebooks and a kettle that is rarely cold.
